Teema 2 - Arpanetist Facebookini - Interneti kujunemislugu

As it's been already said: the world of IT software and hardware is quickly developing. Some projects become permanent in our life, others fall and being memorized only in history books.

And here we are to find out about two interesting pieces of "old" IT world.

The old, but still worthy: e-mail.

It is hard to believe, but e-mail is already ~55 years old, and we still use it in our everyday life, despite popularity of online messangers such as Viber or WhatsApp.

It is believed that first e-mail letters were sent in 1965, when workers of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (shortly - MIT) wrote program "mail" for operational system CTSS, installed on computer IBM 7090/7094.

Common sense of e-mail is absolutely similar with usual mail: you write someone a letter or packing some small parcel (in e-mail case: pictures, music files, short video, etc) and send it to anyone by their mail address. When they get your letter or parcel, they can do with it whatever they want, as it is now on their side.

Using e-mail instead of usual mail for correspondence or communication with friends became much more comfortable and reliable. Nowadays, it takes for about several seconds to deliver an electronic text letter to anyone on the web, while usual paper letters can be on their way for weeks, and moreover, paper letter can be easily corrupted.

The forgotten father of the Internet: ARPANET.

In far 1958, answering on Soviet satellite launch, USA create Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (shortly - DARPA) specialising on researches in computer technologies area. For a decade, all proceeding, collecting and transfering data was performing via punched cards, what made process of researching more struggling.

Then, approximately in 1966, American Department of Defense came up with the idea that in case of war USA need reliable system for data transfer and suggested to develop a computer network for it.

So, after solving lots of issues, in 1969 the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (shortly - ARPANET) was introduced.

ARPANET is commonly known as the first wide-area packet-switching network working with TCP/IP protocol.

Later, ARPANET becomes international due to connecting foreign organizations from UK and Norway in 1973.

Being first prototype of the Internet, ARPANET existance was ended in June, 1990.
